Bonding Function
Most modern toilet paper consists of multiple layers bonded together. A "must-have quality" for high-grade toilet paper is the ability to ensure that these layers do not slide or shift out of alignment; the embossing process serves precisely this purpose.
Increased Bulk
During the embossing process, the paper is stretched, which to some extent disrupts the structure of its cellulose fibers. As a result, the paper's bulk-or fluffiness-increases. Different types of embossing patterns have varying effects on the paper's overall bulk.
Absorbency
Following embossing, the structure of the paper fibers is altered; consequently, both the paper's porosity and its aforementioned bulk undergo changes, which in turn influence its absorbency. While embossing enhances toilet paper's capacity to absorb liquid, it does not typically result in a significant improvement in the speed at which absorption occurs.
